about

Brian originally conceived the idea of a mysterious figure walking into a church service and delivering a jeremiad condemning organized religion, and Jeff ran with it, envisioning this song as the intro to a concept album (which has since been put on the back burner). The title is taken from a quote by Martin Luther: “Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but—more frequently than not—struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.”

lyrics

The preacher in his pulpit stands
Delivering religious bile
A hooded figure in the back
Approaches him and takes control
Those who look upon his face
Transfigured into beings like him
Harken to the phantom’s voice

Look…into my eyes and see the truth
About the world, I scorn
Pious noise, I spit
Upon their rules and laws
You…are your own master
Choose…whom you serve this day
Will it be yourself
Or will you be their slave?
The end of idols
Is drawing near
The end of gods
And their rule by fear

Enemy of faith
Enemy of faith

I speak truth to the powerful. I am the nemesis of the throne. I come with answers for those who wish to see, to lay waste the lies of the false light, to dethrone madness, and silence the rhetoric of hypocrites. To them, you are nothing, merely tools in a grand scheme that you will never understand, for that is not their wish. To them, the death of a body is no loss: we are structurally identical, animated or turned carcass. I come to throw wide the door to which you have always been denied entry, to cast true light on the falsely illuminated. Eyesight is fundamentally blasphemous to our potential. The enemy knows this, and will deny you truth at every turn. They use emotions to enslave your minds and turn you against one another. See ye not that ye are gods? Cast off the yoke of their domination and break the chains that bind your soul, for reason is the enemy of faith!

Look…into my eyes and see the truth
About the world, I scorn
Pious noise, I spit
Upon their rules and laws
You…are your own master
Choose…whom you serve this day
Will it be yourself
Or will you be their slave?
The end of idols
Is drawing near
The end of gods
And their rule by fear
